420 MILLENNIUM S ince establishing his career in 1948, Charles Vert Willie has made a tremendous impact in the field of social sciences. Currently a professor emeritus at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Dr. Willie has been a professor for many prestigious institutions in New York and Massachusetts. He served at Syracuse University for 22 years as an instructor, assistant professor of sociology, associate professor, professor, chairman of the department of sociology, and vice president. Following his tenure at Syracuse University, Dr. Willie began working at the Harvard Graduate School of Education as a professor of education and urban studies and later became the Charles William Eliot professor of education. His hard work and dedication to the field have allowed him to expand his service beyond Syracuse and Harvard as a research director of the Washington Action for Youth delinquency prevention project and president of a committee on juvenile delinquency and youth crime. He has also had the opportunity to sit on the board of directors for the Social Science Research Council. Dr. Willie has received many accolades and awards for his service and contributions to the field, including the Faculty Service Award from the National University Extension Association, a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Syracuse University and the Lee Founders Award from the Society for Study Social Problems. He remains abreast of his field as a member of the American Sociological Association, the Eastern Sociological Society, the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education and the Social Science Research Council. In a recent interview, Dr. Willie attributed his success to his extensive educational background, which consists of a Bachelor of Arts from Morehouse College, a Master of Arts from Atlanta University, a Ph.D. from Syracuse University, and 15 honorary degrees. Of those 15 are Doctor of Humane Letters degrees from Emerson College, Morgan State University, Haverford College, Franklin Pierce College, Rhode Island College and Syracuse University.
