466 MILLENNIUM P atricia Heuermann-Nowik is a theater director whose career spans over 38 years. As a member of the Opera for Youth, the New York Singing Teachers’ Association, OPERA America and the National Opera Association, Ms. Heuermann-Nowik has been a director of the opera theater at Emory University, Clark College and Hofstra University, serving at the latter’s institution until her retirement in 2006. She has also held positions as managing director of the touring educational program for the North Carolina Opera and instructor of stage artistry at the American Institute of Musical Studies. In addition to her extensive resume, she is the founder of the Atlanta Opera, where she served as artistic music director from 1975 to 1980, and founder of the Singers Theater in New York City, where she served as artistic director from 1983 to 1992. Additionally, Ms. Heuermann-Nowik has been chair of the international opera singer’s competition from 1990 to 1994, and chair of the artistic advisory board for the Center for Contemporary Opera from 1990 to 1996. Ms. Heuermann-Nowik is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music. F or over 55 years, Chi Yu Hu has imparted her knowledge of matter and the universe as a physicist to students in postsecondary education. To prepare for her career, Dr. Hu earned a Bachelor of Science from National Taiwan University in 1955, and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1962. She began her professional career that same year as a research associate at St. John’s University, where she remained for one year. Dr. Hu continued to excel in her career, making a home for herself at California State University where she maintained many professor positions, including assistant professor of physics from 1963 to 1969, associate professor from 1968 to 1972, and professor from 1972 to 2005. One year later, she became professor emeritus at the same institution. In addition to her career, she has served as a National Science Foundation visiting professor at UCLA from 1988 to 1990. Dr. Hu has contributed her expertise to professional journals and scientific papers. Her work in the field has been awarded with many fellowships from the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy and the California State University Long Beach Research Foundation.
