480 MILLENNIUM F amed Greek philosopher Plato once said, “Education in music is most sovereign, because more than anything else rhythm and harmony find their way to the inmost soul and take strongest hold upon it, bringing with them and imparting grace.” Raenell McDonough, a retired musician and educator, has embodied Plato’s words through her dedication to music and education. Ms. McDonough began her career as a music educator in the Amarillo Independent School District in 1968. Five years later, she ventured into higher education as a music teacher, piano accompanist and performer for West Texas A&MUniversity before becoming a pianist for the Amarillo Opera. She retired in 2016 but remains a member of the Amarillo Symphony Guild, the Texas Community College Teachers Association, the Amarillo Art Force, which currently she serves as secretary of the executive board, and the American Guild of Organists, for which she is dean of the Amarillo chapter. Ms. McDonough, also a member of the textbook committee for the Amarillo Independent School District, was named in the “Outstanding YoungWomen of America” book series and received the Bill and Louise Dee Outstanding Volunteer Award from the Amarillo Opera. R oland Conant McEldowney has loved the outdoors ever since he was a child and had dreams of being a forest ranger. Mr. McEldowney’s parents were his driving force and instilled the love of nature and outdoors in him. Taking a different route while also fueling his passion, Mr. McEldowney embarked on a career as a geologist. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in geology from Franklin & Marshall College and a Master of Science in geology from San Diego State University. His enthusiasm allowed him to obtain many positions in his field, including as a geologist in Ghana, San Francisco, and Denver, and as vice president, senior vice president and president of geological organizations. He currently serves as the owner of Image of Africa, a position he has held since 1999. Mr. McEldowney has reached many achievements within his career, the most significant being the discovery of the Bibiani open pit gold mine. He remains active in his field as a member of the Geological Society of America and the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration, for which he has served on the board of directors.
