159 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine A s a child, Peter Goldman was inspired by his parents, who were avid readers. Mr. Goldman began writing short stories and other creative works in grade school and knew then that he wanted to pursue a career in writing. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts fromWilliams College in 1954 and a Master of Science from Columbia University in 1955. After graduating, he landed a position as a staff writer for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. He left the position in 1962 and made a home for himself at Newsweek. During his years with the company, he was an associate editor from 1962 to 1964, a general editor from 1965 to 1968, and a senior editor from 1968 to 1988. He was also field director of the special election unit from 1984 to 2008 and ended his career as contributing editor. Mr. Goldman was a journalist during a fast and furious new period. The world and the ways people get their news have changed greatly due to the Internet, but he has stayed relevant in an industry that has begun to die out. He has produced works in many genres, including “Civil Rights: The Challenge of the Fourteenth Amendment,” “Report from Black America,” the second and third editions of “The Death and Life of Malcolm X,” and “The Last Minstrel Show: A Detective Story.” His co-authored works include “Charlie Company: What Vietnam Did to Us,” the 1984, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1994 editions of “The Quest for the Presidency,” “The End of the World That Was,” and “Brothers: Black and Poor — A True Story of Courage and Survival.” He also edited “The Attentive Eye: Selected Journalism” by Helen Dudar and “The Shape-Shifters.” Through his hard work and dedication to his field, Mr. Goldman has received much recognition, including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, several Page One Awards from the Newspaper Guild of New York, the National Magazine Award, the Freedom Foundation Award, the American Legion Fourth Estate Award, and the New York Bar Media Award.
