185 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D r. Brett William Hawkins has been teaching undergraduate and graduate students interested in the law and political science fields for over 30 years. Dr. Hawkins’ educational background prepared him for his fruitful career, as he obtained a Bachelor of Arts with high honors from the University of Rochester, where he was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and earned a Master of Arts and a PhD from Vanderbilt University. With his educational foundation, he became a political science instructor at Vanderbilt in 1963. He left the institution that same year and became a political science instructor and assistant professor at Washington and Lee University, remaining at the institution for two years. In 1965, he relocated to Georgia, obtaining a position as an assistant professor at the University of Georgia and later as associate professor from 1968 to 1970. Relocating again — this time to Milwaukee —Dr. Hawkins made his home at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he was an associate professor and professor until his retirement in 1999. Dr. Hawkins has contributed to his field as an author or co-author of several publications, including “Nashville Metro: The Politics of City-County Consolidation,” “The Ethnic Factor in American Politics,” “Politics in the Metropolis: A Reader in Conflict and Cooperation: Second Edition,” “Politics and Urban Policies,” “The Politics of Raising State and Local Revenue,” and “Professional Associations and Municipal Innovation,” which was published in 1981. He has also contributed articles to publications such as the Journal of Politics, Publius: The Journal of Federalism, the Midwest Review of Public Administration, Social Science Quarterly, the Journal of the American Institute of Planners, Polity, the American Journal of Sociology, and the Journal of Urban Affairs. Dr. Hawkins has achieved much throughout his life, including being the valedictorian of his high school class and a first team all-conference football player, as well as receiving an examination-based New York state scholarship out of high school.
