196 MILLENNIUM M uriel Hinkle is a headstrong and determined woman. She knows what it means to work hard to achieve her goals. Those assets have allowed her to be a successful leader in business. Having received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland in 1951, Ms. Hinkle was ready to tackle the real world. Like some, Ms. Hinkle started from the bottom to get to where she is today. Her first job was as a ticket agent at Eastern Air Lines from 1951 to 1954. Deciding to move on from the company, Ms. Hinkle became a manager for Wild Acres Thoroughbred Farms in Waterford, Conn. She made her home in Waterford and embarked on what would become an impressive career in naval operations. Her first naval-related job was with Analysis and Technology, Inc. in North Stonington, Conn. Her work included illustrating naval warfare predictions and computer-simulated naval engagements. With newfound experience, Ms. Hinkle became president of Sonalysts, Inc., a position she held from 1973 to 1988 and from 1994 to 1998. She served as the chief executive officer from 1973 to 2001. Since then, she has held the role of president and chief executive officer emerita. Outside of her productive career as a savvy leader and businesswoman, Ms. Hinkle has co-authored several books and written a book of her own. “Launching Sonalysts: A Memoir of 40 Years,” traces the history of Sonalysts, Inc.’s growth from a small company to a major corporation. In addition to her achievements as a writer, Ms. Hinkle has received several awards. She has been presented with a number of small-business awards, as well as the William Crawford Distinguished Service Award from the Chamber of Commerce in Eastern Connecticut. She also served on the board of trustees at Thames Science Center from 1979 to 1982. Muriel Hinkle President, CEO Emerita Sonalysts Inc. Waterford, CT
