207 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine M ath can be one of the toughest subjects for students to excel in during their years of schooling. Because there are so many ways to solve a problem and different formulas to become familiar with, it is imperative that math teachers are dedicated to helping their students think critically. Alec Ingraham is one of those educators who wanted to teach and make a difference in the lives of his students. Prof. Ingraham received a Bachelor of Arts in history and a master’s degree in math at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1970 and 1975, respectively. Embarking on a career in teaching, he began as a lecturer in math at Newbury College, where he taught for three years. With his newly acquired experience, he became a professor of math and served as chair of the math department at Southern New Hampshire University for nearly 30 years, remaining at the institution until his retirement in 2014. During his teaching career, Prof. Ingraham made great strides in his community through his civic service. As of 2015, he is the town historian in Billerica, Mass., and the state delegate for Billerica’s section of the Middlesex Canal Commission, which is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Middlesex Canal. He’s also held the positions of treasurer and chair on the commission and is a member of several organizations, including New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics, the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges, for which he was state delegate for 10 years, and the New England Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. He was a NEMATYC board member for four years and conference co-chair in 2006 and 2009. Prof. Ingraham’s drive and service to the community have made him a successful educator who is able to teach simplicity in a world of complications.
