209 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D r. Yoichiro Ito’s desire to know what causes diseases and how they develop has aided in his success as a pathologist and researcher. Dr. Ito obtained a medical degree from Osaka City University in 1958 and became an intern at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan after graduating. Wanting to expand his knowledge, he migrated to the United States and was a pathology resident at Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital (now part of the MetroHealth system) from 1959 to 1961. He relocated to Chicago and served as pathology resident at Michael Reese Hospital from 1961 to 1963. With new knowledge and experiences, Dr. Ito subsequently returned home to impart what he had learned to future practitioners as an instructor of physiology at the Graduate School of Medicine at Osaka City University from 1963 to 1968. He returned to America, settling in Maryland, and began working as a visiting scientist for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health. He was promoted to medical officer in 1978 and has since held that position. Dr. Ito’s research interest is in the separation of biological molecules, and he has extensively worked in the development of countercurrent chromatography and cell separation methods. As a result of his wide-ranging research, he holds patents for a coil planet centrifuge, a rotating-seal-free-flow-through centrifuge, pH-zone-refining countercurrent chromatography, and centrifugal precipitation chromatography. His contributions to his field have earned him recognition and accolades, including a first-place award for a presentation he gave at Cleveland Metropolitan Hospital’s annual science research conference, a Technical Excellence Award in 1979 and 2010, and a grant from the World Health Organization Research Travel Fund through the National Institute for Medical Research. Dr. Ito continues to develop and refine chromatographic methods for separating biological molecules to this day. Yoichiro Ito, MD Pathologist, Researcher National Institutes of Health Bethesda, MD
