234 MILLENNIUM R onald William Lamont-Havers was born March 6, 1920, in Wymondham, England. With a strong desire to help cure and fight diseases and illnesses, Dr. Lamont-Havers embarked on a journey toward a career in medicine that has encompassed more than five decades of ensuring that his patients are provided with the utmost care. Beginning as an intern at Vancouver General Hospital from 1946 to 1948 and an internal medicine resident at Queen Mary Veterans Hospital from 1949 to 1951, he obtained the skills necessary to succeed in his career. Dr. Lamont- Havers wanted to expand his horizons and relocated to New York City. During his time there, he completed a fellowship through the Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital (now New York- Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center) and the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. He also served as medical director of the New York Arthritis Foundation and an instructor of medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons from 1955 to 1964. After leaving the institution in 1964, he became associate director of extramural programs for the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases and was promoted to deputy director in 1972. For eight years, he worked for the National Institutes of Health as an associate director of extramural programs, acting director and deputy director. He made his home at Massachusetts General Hospital, serving as a deputy to the general director for research policy and administration, vice president of research and technical affairs, senior consultant for research, and deputy director of the Cutaneous Biology Research Center. From 1999 until his retirement in 2005, he was also a senior advisor to MGH and Harvard University. Dr. Lamont-Havers is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a member of the American College of Rheumatology, the New York Rheumatism Association and the Arthritis Foundation. He holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Toronto, and a diploma in internal medicine from McGill University.
