246 MILLENNIUM S ince the 1950s William Cauffiel Lickle has made a name for himself in finance, utilizing his expertise to serve major banking corporations. He received a Bachelor of Arts in 1951 and a Bachelor of Law in 1953, both from the University of Virginia. He delved into his career as a stockbroker and later became the chairman and chief executive officer of Laird, Bissell, & Meeds, Inc., serving in that position from 1957 to 1973. After the 1973 merger with Dean Witter, he was a senior vice president and a director of that firm, now Morgan Stanley. In 1978 he became vice chairman and later chairman and CEO of the Delaware Trust Co. After leaving Delaware Trust in 1989 and until 1993 he was, among other JPMorgan titles, chairman of JPMorgan International Holdings. In 1995 he founded and was owner of Lickle Publishing, which later merged with Charlesbridge Publishing of Boston. Before graduation from law school, he gained admittance to the Virginia and American Bar Associations. Later he was admitted to the bar of the Supreme Court of the United States. Mr. Lickle also served on the board of directors for Bessemer Trust Co, Lehman Trust and Marvin & Palmer Associates, and he was chairman of Registrar & Transfer Company. He has contributed to the greater good tremendously by serving as a trustee emeritus of Christiana Care Hospital, a trustee of Jefferson University Medical College, president of the University of Virginia Alumni Association, vice chairman of Jefferson Scholars-U.Va., and a member of President Reagan’s Export Council. Aside from his career in finance, he was a leading racehorse owner from 1972 to 2005. Three times he was Owner of the Year in National Steeplechasing, retiring in 2005 as the second all-time leading owner in terms of money won. His trophies are now in the Hall of Fame in Saratoga, N.Y., and Camden, S.C. He also served on the executive committee and as finance chairman of the Breeders Cup from 1984 to 1995.
