258 MILLENNIUM B orn in Romania, Dr. Robert Mandl had dreams of utilizing his technical skills in the computer science industry. To prepare for a fruitful career, Dr. Mandl obtained a Bachelor of Science in math, physics and linguistics and a Master of Science in math from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a Master of Science in electrical engineering, and a PhD in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1980 to 1983, he worked as a senior software engineer for SofTech Inc. Taking the knowledge and experience he gained there, he went on to serve as a manager of software engineering for the Analogic Corporation for six years and then became a senior software engineer in 1990. Dr. Mandl continued to progress in the engineering field, obtaining positions as a consultant for AT&T Bell Laboratories, a principal engineer for the Digital Equipment Corporation, and an independent researcher in Cambridge, Mass., a role he has held since 2001. In addition to expanding his research, Dr. Mandl is also a presenter in the field. He contributed his intellect as a compiler and editor of the MIT Folk Dance Club song book published in 1975 and has written articles featured in many professional journals. His achievements include the origination of TAXOR, evaluating Sudoku genomics and the complexity of Sudoku puzzles, and developing Tonalized Pinyin, Framescript and TASKMON. Dr. Mandl is a life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the American Mathematical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, the IEEE Computer Society, the Linguistic Society of America, and the Mathematical Association of America.
