275 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine M echanical engineers like Howard S. Mende bear the responsibility of designing, developing and testing machines that are used in society daily. Mr. Mende prepared for a career in engineering by obtaining a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the University of Hawaii in 1969. After receiving his degree, he made a home for himself at Rockwell International. He began his professional career as a level one member of the technology staff with the company in 1970. After a year, he began working at the Los Angeles location and was promoted to a level two member of the technology staff after serving two years in his previous position. During his time in Los Angeles, he obtained a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Southern California and became a development engineer for AiRsch. Manufacturing Company. He continued to excel, ending his tenure with Rockwell International as a level four member of the technology staff. In 1987 he made his home at the Defense Contract Management Agency West, where he became a mechanical engineer and has been an electronics engineer since 1994. Mr. Mende, a registered professional engineer in the state of California, was a lecturer for Pacific States University from 1974 to 1975. He remains active in his field as a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Mr. Mende has been featured in Who’s Who in Finance and Business, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the West, and Who’s Who in the World. W ay e Meyers was born n his family farm in Pennsylvania where he attended the loca one-room el me tary school, and then completed high school in 1941. Dr. Mey rs was halfway through oll ge wh he joined the U.S. Army in 1944, serving i the Infantry and later in Cryptograph in the Ph lippines and Japan. Aft r discharge in 1946 e returned t P nnsylvania and complet d a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Juanita College in 1947. With a inter st in b th missionary medicine and microbiology, Dr. Meyers left his job as a chemist and entered the Moody Bible Institute in Chi go, gr duating in 1950. H la er rec i d a Mast r of Science in medical microbiology in 1953 a d a Ph.D. medical microbi logy i 1955, both from the University of Wisconsi s well as a medical d gree from Baylor Colleg of Medicine. In mid 1961, the American Leprosy Missions (ALM) asked Dr. Meyers to move with the mission’s sup ort, first to Burundi in 1961 and later o the Co go from 1962 to 1973. At each l c tion, Dr. Meyers was in charge e leprosy service, treating patients; anaging case-findings in village and schools all while continuously conducting res a c studies, both in leprosy nd in various diseases of the tropics with the help of his wife who conducted the interviews. Additionally, he taught mathematics and chemist y courses to u iversity students, trained nurses, doctors and ex patriot missi naries in the tr atment and care of leprosy patients. After r turning to the United States in 1973 for a furlough, Dr. Meyers and his family were sent by t e ALM to Honolulu, where he became professor of pathology at the John Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii. Throughout his career, Dr. Meyers has conducted extensive research on human and experimental leprosy and other mycrobacterial diseases. Dr. Meyers officially retired in 2005 but continued volunteering, under the aegis of the American Red Cross and the AFIP until 2011.
