352 MILLENNIUM P lastic surgery is a very intricate practice that requires surgeons, like Alan R. Shons, to be precise, tactful and caring towards their patients. Dr. Shons has over 40 years of experience in the medical and educational fields as a plastic surgeon and professor. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1960, a Doctor of Medicine from Case Western Reserve University in 1965, and a Ph.D. in surgery from the University of Minnesota in 1976. Dr. Shons also served as a captain in the Unites States Air Force from 1967 to 1969. During his lengthy career, Dr. Shons has been a director of the plastic and reconstructive surgery divisions of several medical institutions. He’s also garnered teaching experience as an assistant professor, associate professor and professor of plastic surgery in universities in Florida, Ohio, and Minneapolis. His successful career as a plastic surgeon has been aided by his desire to continuously learn through different positions, such as a research fellow of transplantation immunology, which he obtained at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Shons is a diplomate of both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, for which he has been an examiner. He has been able to maintain longevity in the field of medicine due to his active involvement in the field. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and served as chairman for its trauma committee from 1978 to 1984, and is a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, amongst many other medical organizations. Currently Dr. Shons is a consultant to other plastic surgeons in New York City, a position he has held since 2010, and has contributed his knowledge to two books he co-authored with like-minded physicians.
