285 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine R od Mullen has maintained a successful career as a nonprofit organization executive. Mr. Mullen has over four decades of professional experience and currently serves as the founder, president and chief executive officer of Amity Foundation, an institution dedicated to providing holistic substance abuse treatment services for individuals struggling to overcome the hardships and personal devastation of their alcohol addiction, drug abuse, and other self destructive, life negating behaviors. Throughout his fruitful career, he reached many achievements, including the development of in-prison therapeutic community programs for addicted offenders and violent offenders, which demonstrated significant reductions in recidivism to drug abuse, violence and other criminal activities, the implementation of a comprehensive holistic curriculum for therapeutic communities, adaptation of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy for residential treatment programs and research in holistic addiction treatment. Mr. Mullen has maintained many directorial positions for several nonprofit facilities and organizations, including Oakland Facility, San Francisco Facility, Tomales Bay Facility, Synanon Foundation Inc., VisionQuest Arizona and Amity, Inc. Wanting to impart his knowledge of the field to others, he directed documentaries such as “Prodigal Daughters,” “TC Pioneers,” “Essential Elements of the Therapeutic Community” and “Improving TC Encounter Groups.” In addition to his filming, he has also contributed chapters to books and articles to professional journals. He also had work showcased in exhibitions. He was recently in Rome as one of the primary speakers on the topic of the medicalization of drug therapy abuse and is working with researchers and medical specialists on drug-related policies to help establish this. Even as a busy nonprofit organization executive, Mr. Mullen remains active and current in the field as member of the European Federation of Therapeutic Communities and the American Correctional Association, amongst others.
