290 MILLENNIUM A manda Nelson Pittman has used her passion for music to create a career as a music educator that has spanned over six decades. When Dr. Nelson Pittman became a teacher, she wanted to teach music; however, that wasn’t available. One day, she saw a woman in uniform walking down the street and decided she was going to enlist to get a commission. Dr. Nelson Pittman joined the U.S. Air Force, and after she left with her commission, she decided she wasn’t going to move back to Texas. She moved in with her brother in California and went to school to get her music degree. In 1949, she began her education as a teacher of elementary education at Fort Worth Schools. During the tenure of her career, she has held many positions as a teacher of elementary music at schools, including Montgomery County Schools, Beverly Hills Unified Schools, Clark County School District and LA City Schools, a position she has held since 1999. In addition to her career, Dr. Nelson Pittman has branched out of elementary education as an instructor of music education at the University of Southern California from 1975 to 1977, Pepperdine University from 1967 to 1970, and California State University from 2002 to 2003. She has also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve as an administrative officer for five years and currently as an ambassador at the University of Southern California. Dr. Nelson Pittman remains active in the field as a member of the California Music Educators Association, the LA City Elementary Schools Music Association, serving as its vice president from 2004 to 2006, the International Association for Jazz Education, the Music Educators National Conference, serving as its presenter from 1960 to 2006, and the Women in Military Service for American Foundation, where she is also a charter member. She has been featured in several editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World and Who’s Who of American Women. Amanda Nelson Pittman, D.Mus.
