291 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine A s a psychiatrist, San Duy Nguyen has diagnosed, treated and helped prevent disorders of the mind for 60 years. Dr. Nguyen became involved in his profession when he was in the Vietnamese Army serving as an American doctor. The Vietnamese Army didn't have psychiatric services, which in turn sparked his desire to help. During his service, he was chief of psychiatry, as well as chief consultant in neuropsychiatry to the Surgeon General. He began working as an intern at Cho Ray Hospital from 1957 to 1958, and shortly thereafter, earned a Doctor of Medicine at Saigon University in 1960. He relocated to Michigan eight years later and began at University Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, while also completing postgraduate work at the University of Michigan. In 1971, he made a home in Canada where he continued to maintain positions in the field at several institutions, including the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Homewood Health, Guelph General Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital, Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Nguyen is actively involved in his community, raising social consciousness and helping Asian communities, particularly Vietnamese communities, receive funding and access to mental health services. In addition to his service to others, he has shared his knowledge of the field in several books, including, “Etude du Tetanos au Vietnam,” “Psychosomatic Medicine: Theoretical, Clinical, and Transcultural Aspects,” “Uprooting, Loss and Adaptation,” “Southeast Asian Mental Health,” “Ten Years Later: Indochinese Communities in Canada” and “Refugee Resettlement and Well-Being.” He has also co- authored “The Psychology and Physiology of Stress.” Dr. Nguyen remains a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, the International Society for Hypnosis, the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, the American Psychiatric Association, the Canadian Psychiatric Association and the Canadian Medical Association.
