294 MILLENNIUM S tanton Peelle Nolan is an esteemed surgeon with over five decades of experience in the medical field. A diplomate of the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Nolan has spent his career helping to save lives and keep patients healthy. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University and a medical degree from the University of Virginia. He began his career as an intern for the UVA Health System, where he continues to practice, and was promoted to assistant resident of general surgery in 1960 and research fellow of surgery in 1961. During his research tenure, he obtained a Master of Science from his alma mater, the University of Virginia, in 1962. Thereafter, he continued to excel at the institution, serving as senior assistant resident of general surgery, chief resident of general surgery, chief resident of thoracic cardiovascular surgery and senior research associate. In addition to practicing medicine, he has also shared his knowledge with future surgeons as an assistant, associate and full professor of surgery, the Claude A. Jessup Professor of Surgery, a clinical professor of surgery and a professor emeritus of surgery, a position he has held since 2005. He contributed to his field as a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Surgical Research from 1973 to 1979, and of Annals of Thoracic Surgery from 1979 to 1988. He was also on the science advisory board of the Journal of Heart Valve Disease from 1993 to 2006, and he has contributed 171 articles to professional journals and 21 chapters to medical books. Dr. Nolan’s hard work and dedication to the field of medicine have garnered a plethora of awards.
