177 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D r. Walter A. Hairston is a retired school system administrator with a military background. Dr. Hairston’s professional career began in the U.S. Army in 1979 as a commandant of the 2071st U.S. Army School. That same year, he began serving as chief evaluator and director of student activities at Command and General Staff College, holding this position from 1979 to 1981. In 1984 he became a member of the Functional Area Assessment Team for the U.S. Army Transportation Corps. Two years later, he began working for the Baltimore City Department of Education, where he held positions as a teacher, department head and principal. He continued to expand in his career, becoming the vice chairman of the board of directors at American Sheroe Inc. and Progressive Horizon, and as commandant of Post 301 of American Legion in Phoenix, Maryland, serving in this capacity until retirement in 1988. In preparation to have a successful career, he earned a Bachelor of Science from Morgan State University in 1959, a Master of Education from Loyola College in 1970, and completed graduate work at Command General Staff College and National Defense University in 179. In addition, he completed the necessary work for a Doctor of Education from Morgan State University in 2018. Dr. Hairston has authored a book “No Excuses.” He remains active in his area of expertise with groups such as the Masons, Baltimore Mules, the Thespian Honor Society, and the Jacksonville Neighborhood Association.
