228 MILLENNIUM N ow retired, Dr. Ordie H. King has over five decades of professional experience. As an oral pathologist, Dr. King was tasked with diagnosing and studying the causes of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. A diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, he began his career practicing at the University of Tennessee as a United States Public Health Service postdoctoral fellow. He advanced through the ranks, leaving the university in 1963 after completing a residency in oral pathology at hospitals in the city of Memphis, Tenn. He continued flourishing in his career, working at educational institutions including Northwestern University, St. Louis University, Washington University in St. Louis, West Virginia University and Southern Illinois University. In addition to serving in executive positions, he also taught students as a professor of oral pathology. Dr. King had the opportunity to extend himself outside of teaching and practiced as a member of the Missouri Board of Dental Specialty Examiners. He also held consulting roles with the cancer control program for the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the St. Louis County Medical Examiner and a VA hospital in West Virginia. A former dental consultant to the chief medical examiner in the state of Tennessee, he has contributed his expertise to many publications in his field. Dr. King received a Bachelor of Science from Memphis State University in 1957, as well as a Doctor of Dental Medicine and a PhD, both from the University of Tennessee. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a member of several organizations, including the American Dental Association and the American Society of Cytopathology.
