Before embarking on a career in education, Mr. Mariotti began working as a financial analyst for the Ford Motor Company from 1977 to 1979. With the knowledge and experience he gained from that position, he served as president and founder of Mason Import/ Export from 1979 to 1982. Leaving a successful business in 1982, he became a special education teacher for New York City Public Schools. With the tough responsibility of dealing with the inner-city youth, he found that he could reach and motivate his students by teaching them how to run a small business. Through this experience, five years later he was able to create NFTE, a program that brings entrepreneurship education to low-income youth while empowering them to create and navigate their own paths from poverty. His innovative thinking and dedication have helped over 600,000 young people graduate, and he has implemented his program in 22 states and 12 countries. When Mr. Mariotti founded NFTE, he discovered there were no textbooks available for teaching entrepreneurship to young people, so he wrote groundbreaking textbooks for NFTE courses, including the Golden Lamp Award-winning high school textbook “Entrepreneurship: Starting and Operating a Small Business” now in its 11 th edition, and the junior college textbook “Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management.”Currently he is working on three projects, including two books, “The Insiders Guide to Starting, Financing and Operating a Sustainable Social Enterprise” and “Goodbye Homeboy; The True Story of Steve Mariotti,” and a documentary titled “Triumph of the Entrepreneurial Spirit.” He recently gave a presentation at Baylor University in Waco, Texas about small business and entrepreneurship.
