276 MILLENNIUM E manuel John Mickel has dedicated over 50 years to the field of education, with his intelligence and credentials contributed to his successful career. Dr. Mickel obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Louisiana State University in 1959, and then received a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina in 1961 and 1965 respectively. He began his educational career as an associate professor at the University of Nebraska, remaining in that position for two years before becoming an associate professor in 1967. Dr. Mickel left the institution in 1968 and made a home for himself in the foreign language department at Indiana University. With research expertise in areas such as medieval romance, allegory and persona in European literature, and 19th-century literature, he imparted his knowledge to both undergraduate and graduate students. During his 31 years at the institution, he assumed prestigious roles as director of the medieval studies department and chairman of the department of French and Italian before gaining emeritus status. In addition to his career in education, Dr. Mickel has been a consultant for the National Endowment for the Humanities, an evaluator for the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowship, and an advisor to the Société Rencesvals. He was also a board member of the Nineteenth-Century French Studies Association and Mediaevalia, as well as a visiting scholar at Pembroke College, a constituent of the University of Cambridge. Dr. Mickel has contributed his knowledge to the foreign language field by authoring several books, including “Marie de France,” Eugène Fromentin,” “GanelonTreason and the ‘Chanson de Roland.’” He also translated a version of Jules Vernes’ complete “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and was co-editor of the University of Alabama’s “The Old French Crusade Cycle,” including Vol. 3: Les Enfances Godefroi and Le Retour de Cornumarant, from 1977 to 2003. In 2011 Dr. Mickel was designated Officier de l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques, one of France’s highest academic honors. Although retired, he intends to work on select projects.
