279 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine B efore beginning his artistic career, Leland Modesitt first delved into economics and then politics. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in 1965, Mr. Modesitt spent five years in the U.S. Navy, first as an amphibious boat officer and then as a helicopter search and rescue pilot. Upon leaving active duty, he became a research analyst for Norgren USA, then, a year later, an associate for Koebel and Company. In 1972, he became a research director for Armstrong for Congress, then a legislative assistant for U.S. Representative William Armstrong. In 1979, he became the staff director for U.S. Representative Ken Kramer. He later served as director of congressional relations and legislation for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1981 to 1984 and as a senior environmental manager for Multinational Business Services in 1985. In 1990, he left Washington to write full time while also lecturing part time at Plymouth State University until 1993. Mr. Modesitt, whose pen name is L.E. Modesitt, Jr., was fascinated with poetry at a very young age. At the suggestion of a friend who encouraged him to expand his horizons, he began writing short stories when he was 30. Having read science fiction all of his life, he focused on that genre and published his first story in 1973. The best-selling author of over 70 titles encompassing two science fiction series, four fantasy series and several other novels, he has also published technical studies and articles, columns, poetry, and a number of science fiction stories. In addition to his collection of stories, he wrote technical articles on the environment and energy when he worked in Washington, D.C. Mr. Modesitt recently published a book titled “Recluce Tales: Stories from the World of Recluce” in January 2017 and is set to release his latest work, “Assassin’s Price,” thereafter.
