284 MILLENNIUM E berhard Mueller-Heubach was born February 24, 1942 in Berlin and received his medical degree from the University of Koeln in 1966. Following an internship at his alma mater, Dr. Mueller-Heubach came to the United States in 1968 for an internship at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. From 1969 to 1971, he was a National Institutes of Health research fellow in reproductive physiology in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University, where he conducted basic research in fetal physiology using the pregnant rhesus monkey model. During this time he spent 10 months at the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Perinatal Physiology in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From 1971 to 1974 he was a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center, and he was selected to serve as a chief resident in obstetrics and gynecology from 1974 to 1975. In 1977, Dr. Mueller-Heubach became one of the first obstetricians to be certified in maternal-fetal medicine as a subspecialty and established the largest perinatal outreach program in the country, which involved 29 community hospitals. In 1989 he became the Frank R. Lock Professor and chairman of the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Wake Forest University. Reflecting his background, he established basic research in the department, a rarity among medical school OB/GYN departments. From 1998 to 2000, Dr. Mueller-Heubach served as president of the Council of University Chairs of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He was a member of the editorial board of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the first foreign medical graduate to serve in this capacity in the history of the journal. In 2002, he stepped down as chair and continued as Frank R. Lock Professor until his retirement in 2007. He has been president of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, the most prestigious and selective academic society in the specialty and served for 23 years as an examiner for the oral examination of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
