293 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine W ith almost 45 years of experience in both the private and public sectors, WilliamNitze is able to handle the risks that come with managing early stage companies in different fields. While Mr. Nitze has an educational background in law, he has also become known for his work in the government and not-for- profit sectors. Mr. Nitze’s career began in the 1970s, when he became a corporate lawyer based in New York City and started his lifelong engagement with a variety of nonprofit organizations. Mr. Nitze began to refocus his career on energy and environmental issues when he joined the Mobil Oil Corporation as counsel for Mobil South, Inc. in 1974. He then further developed his skills by becoming general counsel for Mobil Oil Japan in 1976, and assistant general counsel of the exploration and production division of Mobil in 1980. Wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps in public service, Mr. Nitze became deputy assistant secretary for environment, health and natural resources for the U.S. Department of State in 1987. His experience representing the United States on international energy and environmental issues led him to be selected as president of the Alliance to Save Energy in 1990. Based on his growing experience, Mr. Nitze was nominated and confirmed as assistant administrator for international activities of the United States Environmental Protection Agency in 1994. Since leaving the government in January 2001, he has led a number of private organizations in the energy and environment space, including the Gemstar Group, GridPoint, Inc., the Galapagos Conservancy and the Climate Institute. Mr. Nitze is also an adjunct faculty member of George Mason University and has been a professional lecturer for the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. In order to expand his knowledge of environmental law, policy and management, he worked as a visiting scholar at the Environmental Law Institute for eight months in 1990 before joining the Alliance. Currently, Mr. Nitze serves as chairman of Oceana Energy Company, and as vice chairman of Senseye, a leader in advanced cognitive processing technology for deception and detection.
