305 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine R oy H. Park Jr.’s father was a workaholic entrepreneur who came off a small farm to work through four careers to become a billionaire. Though unable to spend much time with him growing up, his admiration for his dedication to work led young Mr. Park to set forth on an independent career of his own. Only years later, in returning to the family business did he eventually buy the part of it he runs today. After attending the Lawrenceville School, Mr. Park earned a Bachelor of Arts in journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Business Administration from Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management. While earning his MBA, he read about J. Walter Thompson, the then largest advertising agency in the world and immediately knew it was the only company he wanted to work for. After graduating in 1963, he was hired by the agency and seven years later in 1971, he was asked to join his father’s Park Communications group of broadcasting, newspaper and outdoor advertising companies. In 1988, he bought the outdoor advertising division from his father which he heads today. Upon his father’s death in 1993, his media conglomerate reached 25 percent of the American public. His father’s endowment of Park Foundation, Inc., led to the establishment of Triad Foundation, Inc., which was split off by Roy H. Park Jr. and his family in 2003 to honor the Roy Hampton Park Family Legacy. In following his career path, Mr. Park has been awarded the highest honors the Board of Trustees of both Cornell and UNC can bestow, has been inducted into the North Carolina Advertising, Media and Journalism Halls of Fame and was selected as a founding member of the Leadership Council of the Cornell SC Johnson School of Business, the third largest business school in the world. He is the author of “Sons in the Shadow: Surviving the Family Business as an SOB (Son of the Boss)” and remains active in his field in many other positions and memberships. Roy H.
