329 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine M ary-Julia Royall is a well- regarded musician and historian. In 1945 Ms. Royall began her formal education at Erskine College, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Arts from the University of South Carolina in 1948. She became certified in musical supervision in 1945 and eight years later, earned another certification in organ performance from her alma mater. With her credentials, Ms. Royall became a staff member of the Brevard Music Center. The skills she gained there allowed her to progress and acquire the position of music teacher at Montreat College. She decided that she wanted to teach music outside of the classroom and provided private piano lessons from 1953 to 1966. She later continued her career in the education system as the director of the glee clubs for Colquitt County High School from 1960 to 1962 and Coastal Christian Preparatory School from 1972 to 1974. Aside from her career in music education, Ms. Royall has served as Mount Pleasant’s official historian for over 20 years and is a founding member of the Mount Pleasant Historical Commission. She has been recognized by Mount Pleasant Mayor Linda Page, the Mount Pleasant Town Council and members of the Mount Pleasant Historical Commission and is a recipient of the Cresco Historical Stewardship Award. The award honors an individual that has done exemplary work in studying, preserving, restoring, or promoting the history of Mount Pleasant. She also had the honor of having a park in the same town named after her and has played in several concerts as an organist. Ms. Royall has documented her career as a historian through her writing, publishing several books that chronicle life in her hometown. She is affiliated with various organizations, such as the American Guild of Organists, the Organ Historical Society and the Preservation Society of Charleston. Mary-Julia C.
