334 MILLENNIUM M edical educator Jari Salo was born in Virrat, Finland on May 27, 1967. For over 25 years, Dr. Salo has been performing research and teaching undergraduate and graduate students across Finland. Before embarking on his fruitful career, he earned a Doctor of Medicine and Ph.D. from the University of Oulu. In 2002, he became a specialist and docent in orthopedics and traumatology at the University of Helsinki, where he served as a senior lecturer and professor until 2011. He was also the head of research and education in surgery from 2006 to 2011. After leaving the institution in 2011, he began working as a professor of traumatology at the University of Eastern Finland. Additionally, he is founder, director and a clinical consultant for Onbone, a company that develops Woodcast products for medical and surgical purposes. He previously served on the board of directors of the National Doctoral Programme of Musculoskeletal Disorders and Biomaterials and was a senior consultant for Finnish Aero-Med. For his hard work and dedication to his field, Dr. Salo was named National Educator of the Year by the National TULES Foundation in 2005, Teaching Person of the Year in 2006, and Best Medical Study Supervisor of the Year by the University of Helsinki in 2010. He also received the Knight Award from the National Orthopedic Association and served as second lieutenant in the Finnish Army. The former editor-in-chief of the Orthopedic Society Journal, he remains active in his field as a member of the National Orthopedic Society, the National Trauma Society, and the European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (EFORT). Looking to the future, Dr. Salo intends to continue working in the educational field to help prepare new generations of orthopedic surgeons.
