337 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine D ahleen Emi Sawai has been interested in the way different cultures utilize language to communicate since the beginning of her career. As a foreign language educator, Ms. Sawai taught students to speak, comprehend and write in Japanese and English. Her career allowed her to develop her foreign language skills while working with students in Honolulu and Tokyo. For one year she taught English at Tokyo Family Court before earning a certification to become a Japanese teacher in Hawaii. She returned to Tokyo from 1983 to 1984 to teach English at the Family Court Probation Officer Training School and later settled in Honolulu, where she was an educator with the Consortium for Teaching Asia and the Pacific in the Schools. Ms. Sawai was a Japanese teacher at W.R. Farrington High School until her retirement and served as lead instructor of the school’s International Studies Academy from 2008 to 2011. She was also chairman of the department of world language in Honolulu. Outside of teaching, she has been active in her community as an ad hoc committee member for the School Community Council and the secretary and director of the Moanalua Gardens Community Association. She has been recognized as a mentor and received awards from Keio Gijuku Daigaku from 1982 to 1984. She earned a Bachelor of Arts, a diploma in elementary education, a diploma in secondary education, and a Master of Education from the University of Hawai i at Mānoa.
