340 MILLENNIUM J ohn Schenck has been diagnosing and treating illnesses and injuries for 52 years. Dr. Schenck earned a Bachelor of Science in physics and a Ph.D. in physics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1961 and 1965 respectively, and a Doctor of Medicine from Albany Medical College in 1977. After receiving his credentials, he embarked on a career in medicine starting as a staff scientist of the electronics laboratory at GE Syracuse from 1965 to 1973. He continued to break ground in the medical field holding positions, including intern at Albany Medical Center, staff member, senior scientist and principal scientist at GE Global Research Center, member of the medical staff at Ellis Hospital, and senior principal scientist at GE Global research, a position he has held since 2014. He also delved into education as an associate professor of electrical engineering at Syracuse University, adjunct assistant professor of the department of radiology at the University of Pennsylvania, and adjunct professor of neurology at Albany Medical College. Dr. Schenck’s achievements include 20 patents for magnetic resonance imaging and being known as the MRI Pioneer. He has contributed his vast knowledge of the field to professional journals and has been featured in National Geographic Documentary Breakthrough: The Stories behind the Science in 2015. His renowned work in the field has earned him the S.S. Greenfield Award from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, a National Merit scholar, a National Science Foundation Fellow, a Coolidge Fellow, and being named to Mexico Academy and Central School’s Alumni Hall of Fame in 2014 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Hall of Fame in 2015. Dr. Schenck remains abreast of his field as a fellow of the American Physical Society, the International Society Magnetic Resonance of Medicine and a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and the New York Academy of Sciences.
