342 MILLENNIUM E dison E. Scholes is a decorated and well respected military officer whose father was very adamant about education and informed his son that he would attend college. The younger Mr. Scholes agreed, but only on the condition that he would go to a military college. Instead, he enlisted in the United States Army as a soldier and became well versed in combat and combat training. Having received a Bachelor of Science in physics from North Georgia College and State University and a Master of Science in operations research from the Naval Postgraduate School, he also went on to complete postgraduate work at the United States Army War College and the Harvard Defense Policy Seminar. With over 56 years of professional experience, Mr. Scholes has climbed the ladder of success in the military. Beginning his career as a commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army in 1961, he advanced through the ranks, becoming a major general in 1991. Throughout his career he has served in many leadership roles, including as deputy commanding general chief of staff for the 3rd division of the United States Army and as chief of staff of the XVIII Airborne Corps. Currently, he utilizes his military expertise as a private contractor for numerous countries, a position he has held since 2002. Mr. Scholes received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, a Silver Star Medal, the Legion of Merit Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with valor device and one oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star Medal for combat service and two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart Medal with oak leaf cluster, and six Air Medal awards.
