343 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine M echanical engineers are tasked with designing, developing, building, and testing mechanical and thermal sensors and devices in machinery. It takes smart and diligent engineers like Gordon L. Scofield to ensure that the machines society relies on every day work properly. Dr. Scofield prepared for his fruitful career in mechanical engineering by obtaining a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, a Master of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Missouri- ROLLA, and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at the University of Oklahoma. After graduating college, he became an instructor of mechanical engineering at South Dakota State University. He later relocated to Missouri and became a graduate assistant at the University of Missouri-ROLLA, remaining at the institution for 22 years and serving as an instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor. With all the experience he gained from teaching and consulting, he was able to solidify a position as assistant vice president for academic affairs at the South Dakota School of Mines andTechnology. Additionally, Dr. Scofield has served a term on the national board of directors for the Accreditation Board for Engineering andTechnology, Inc., (ABET) and served 10 years as department head of Mechanical Engineering and Synergistic Mechanics at MichiganTechnological University in the 70’s. Dr. Scofield is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, SAE International, which he served as president for a year, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He has garnered many accomplishments, including receiving the Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Missouri-ROLLA in 1975 and the Excellence in Engineering Education award from the Society of Automotive Engineers, and becoming a science faculty fellow for the National Science Foundation from 1966 to 1967. Dr. Scofield also served in America’s Navy for three years and was a consultant for the Navy’s Ordnance Test Station from 1956 to 1971. Although he is retired, Dr. Scofield remains involved in the field of mechanical engineering by contributing knowledge as a consultant. Gordon L.
