345 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine T homas L. Scribner is an ingenious marketing executive who revolutionized the way liquid materials are packaged. Before becoming the inventor Mr. Scribner is today, he received a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Toledo and completed postgraduate studies in law, providing him with the necessary tools to succeed. He began his professional career developing theories and practices for producing clear, plastic beverage containers at Owens-Illinois, Inc., a company he remained with for 20 years. During that time, he started working with plastics and designed a beverage container that looked like glass but was made from a polymer and could not be easily broken. He would bring his daughter with him on the weekends to record notes as he worked on his new invention. With limited resources, Mr. Scribner was only able to make 12 bottles a day. Upon completing his invention, he was invited to speak at the headquarters of the corporation, where he gave a presentation on the mechanics of the product and its feasibility. After his presentation, he was asked to further demonstrate the durability of his polymer container. With the help of his technician, senior members of the division were able to visualize and witness this much-needed development. Although he used Owens-Illinois’ facilities and resources, Mr. Scribner’s name was recorded on the legal document sent to the federal government for patenting. Once completed, he transferred into corporate purchasing where he bought raw materials for the divisions of plastic products. Having been promoted to manager of plastics product development, he left the company in 1982 and became a purchasing manager for A C Leadbetter & Son Inc, where he remained from 1983 to 2003. Mr. Scribner remains active as a member of the Free and Accepted Masons and American Mensa. His hard work and dedication have helped the plastics manufacturing business reach new heights. Thomas L.
