355 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine W ithout engineers, whose scientific knowledge helps to solve real-world problems, we would not be able to use microwaves or find the answers to questions quickly using Google. From flying through the air with ease on commercial airlines to simply making a phone call, daily living is made simpler because of engineers. Born with the brains and curiosity to solve many of life’s obstacles, William Skillman went to Lehigh University in Bethlehem Pa., where he obtained a Bachelor of Science in engineering physics. He later attended the University of Rochester and received a master’s degree in physics. Having the skills and knowledge necessary to sustain a blossoming career, Mr. Skillman became an associate engineer for the Westinghouse Electric Corporation. Unlike many people who move up the ladder in their careers through employment with various companies, Mr. Skillman invested himself in Westinghouse, progressing at a rapid rate. From 1956 to 1958, he served as an engineer, following his promotion from a previous role as assistant engineer. Mr. Skillman then advanced to senior engineer, staying in that position for three years before working as a supervisory engineer for another three years, and as senior engineer for 12 years. He retired as a consulting engineer in 1993. Outside of his other career achievements, Mr. Skillman has written a book, “Radar Calculations Using the TI-59 Programmable Calculator,” which was published in 1983, and contributed a chapter to the first and second editions of “Radar Handbook” with other like-minded engineers. He is a member of the Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society and received, along with radar program manager Robert Cowdery, the 1995 Pioneer Award granted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He also served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948. With over 40 years invested in the Westinghouse Electric Corporation and a lifetime of knowledge in engineering, Mr. Skillman is sure to have left his mark.
