410 MILLENNIUM R oss Leslie Watts began making a name for himself as an accountant in his home country of Australia. Dr. Watts began his career as an audit clerk at Forsythe & Co., from 1960 to 1964 and was then promoted to accountant. During his time at the company, he obtained a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Newcastle. Soon after graduating, he relocated to Chicago and obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago while maintaining his position as instructor for the Booth School of Business. Continuing to progress in his career and education, he became an assistant professor of Simon Business School in 1971 and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago that same year. He remained teaching at the institution as an associate professor and professor. Dr. Watts went on to excel even further thereafter, serving as endowed chair for the Rochester Telephone Corporation, the William H. Meckling Professor of Business Administration at the University of Rochester, a professor in the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Erwin H. Schell Professor of Management at MIT. Beginning in 2013, he gained emeritus status at MIT and was named distinguished chair, professor and director of the Accounting Research Center at National Taiwan University. Dr. Watts was a professor of commerce at the University of Newcastle from 1974 to 1976, an honorary professor at City University of Hong Kong in 1966, a distinguished lecturer at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 1994, and a visiting professor at MIT in 2002. He has also contributed articles on accounting research to professional journals and has been co-editor, editor and associate editor of several accounting-related journals. Dr. Watts remains active in his field as a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Financial Services Association and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.
