449 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine T o prepare for his career as a demography professor and director, Gordon De Jong attended Central College, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1957. Shortly after, Dr. De Jong continued his education, earning a Master of Arts and a PhD at the University of Kentucky. He has imparted his knowledge both nationally and internationally at universities, including the University of Kentucky, Pennsylvania State University, and the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute. Through his international endeavors, he has been able to solidify a position as a research consultant for the governments of Thailand, the Philippines and South Africa since 1983, and has served as the director of the Population Research Institute at Pennsylvania University from 1974 to 1976 and again from 1982 to 1988. Dr. De Jong's many career achievements include research in 30 competitively awarded research training grants in demography issues internationally, research in immigration and international migration, and becoming the founder and director of the graduate program in demography at Pennsylvania State University. He has contributed countless articles to professional journals and has been an editor of academic books and journals in the field. M artha Dixon is an anatomist, physiologist and educator with over 51 years of experience. As a certified biology teacher in California, Dr. Dixon has held many teaching positions in the region. After two years in research, her career began as a teacher at Lowell High School from 1970 to 1972. She moved into postsecondary education as a postdoctoral fellow and scientist instructor at York University in Toronto, Canada, for four years. Returning to California, she obtained a position as a staff scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory for two years before becoming a director of the tissue network at the Bay Area Tumor Institute. She continued in an educational capacity as an instructor at Peralta Community College from 1989 to 1994, and as a professor at Diablo Valley College, a position she has held since 1994, and continues to serve as a reviewer for Textbook Publishers. Dr. Dixon earned a Bachelor of Arts in physiology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1966, a PhD in biophysics from the University of California in 1983 and a standard secondary teaching credential in biology from San Francisco State University in 1970.
