454 MILLENNIUM J ane Williams Fleming is a former educator and talented writer with over 30 years of experience in her field. Ms. Fleming graduated with a Bachelor of Science from UCLA in 1951. That same year, she obtained her first job as a teacher for the San Diego Unified School District, where she taught for four years before transitioning into her new role in the Newport Mesa Unified School District. She taught in the Long Beach Unified School District from 1956 to 1958 before taking a four-year hiatus and returning to schools in 1962, remaining until her retirement in 1987. During her second stint with the district, Ms. Fleming obtained a Master of Arts from California State University in 1969. Though formally retired from her educational career, she was a part-time teacher from 1990 to 1992 and a speaker for the Board of Education. She utilized her writing skills to author a book titled “Why Janey Can’t Teach.” Described in its pages is an experimental club that successfully eliminated bullying at the school level. She is the proud mother of three sons and has three daughters-in-law and three grandsons. L arry J. Forney is a chemical engineer and educator who has imparted his knowledge to the chemical engineers of tomorrow. Dr. Forney obtained a Bachelor of Science from the Case Institute of Technology, a Master of Science and a Master of Engineering from MIT, and a Ph.D. from Harvard University. Throughout his 40-year career, he has maintained positions as a research engineer, assistant professor of the department of civil engineering, associate professor of chemical engineering and professor emeritus. Dr. Forney had three successful patents in UV disinfection of fluids and is interested in the application of modern computational fluid dynamic (CFD) codes to chemical processing. His numerical simulations involve the use of various turbulent models in industrial mixing applications, and his recent work involves the computation of mass transfer by jet injection and the use of multiple jets for the mixing of gases upstream from catalytic reactors. He has contributed 80 articles to refereed journals, including the AIChE and Food Science Journals. Dr. Forney has received numerous awards for his contributions to the field and remains an active member of many engineering-related organizations.
