493 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine M arilyn A. Ray is an educator and nurse with more than 35 years of experience in direct care and research. As a founder of the National Caring Research Conference and developer of the theory of bureaucratic caring, Dr. Ray is interested in helping hospitals and physicians provide ethical, human-centered care while navigating the economic, legal, political and technological complexities associated with health care organizations. Almost 20 years after she retired from the U.S. Air Force Reserve Nurse Corps as a colonel, her “Theory of Bureaucratic Caring” is still being used as a structural framework for the USAF Medical Service’s Interdisciplinary Professional Practice Model. The author of the 2011 AJN Book of the Year, “Nursing, Caring, and Complexity Science: For Human Environment Well-Being,” she also edited and co-wrote “A Hand Book For Caring Science: Expanding The Paradigm,” which is slated for publication in 2018. Dr. Ray holds a BSN and MSN from the University of Colorado Denver, as well as an MA in anthropology and a Ph.D. in nursing. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nursing Alumni Association at the University of Colorado in 2017. W ayne M. Riggs is an independent artist who has always had a knack for creativity. Mr. Riggs earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Southern Illinois University in 1976 and later served as a guest critic for the Rhode Island School of Design, a lecturer at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum and the Museum of Arts and Sciences, and the director of photography for the Callanwolde Fine Arts Center. His art has been exhibited at Artspace in Richmond, Va., and is currently featured in several permanent collections, including one piece at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 11 pieces at the High Museum of Art, and two pieces at the Tampa Museum of Art. He has enjoyed his work being displayed in one-man shows at the Davenport City Gallery and Museum (now the Figge Art Museum), the Cornell Fine Arts Museum, La Mama Umbria International in Spoleto, Italy, the British Embassy in Antigua, and Crocker’s Mark Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. Mr. Riggs believes that it is important to show perseverance in life because rejection may come. However, it is important to keep working hard and go forward no matter what. Marilyn A.
