505 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine R ichard Wesley Thiede’s communications expertise has aided in his success for over 40 years. Dr. Thiede obtained a Bachelor of Science from Eastern Michigan University in 1961 and a Master of Arts from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1963. After teaching at several high schools across Michigan, he began graduate work at the University of Missouri in 1971, serving as a teaching assistant and director of theater publicity while studying. He was an instructor at Ottumwa Heights College in Iowa from 1975 to 1976, and at Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, Nebraska, from 1976 to 1977, the year he received a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. He continued to excel in education, working at Defiance College in Ohio from 1978 to 1997, the year he was awarded emeritus status upon his retirement. Following this, Dr. Thiede continued as an adjunct instructor and substitute teacher for several institutions. He also delved into the creative arts as an actor and director, appearing in and directing more than 70 productions over 25 years. He has received many awards, including a citation award at the Central Michigan University Forensic Festival in 1960 for his Shakespearian “Julius Caesar” reading. A s a scientist and former administrator, Brian Thompson knows firsthand how impactful a good leader can be. Dr. Thompson, formerly the William F. May Professor of Engineering, director of the Institute of Optics, and dean of the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University of Rochester, devoted nearly 30 years to the study of optics at the institution, where the Brian J. Thompson Professorship in Optical Engineering was established in his honor. A prominent researcher in image processing, coherent optics and holography, he has conducted experimental studies on optical phenomena and created illustrations that appear in textbooks and other educational literature. Dr. Thompson has also published more than 150 scholarly articles and papers and served on the editorial boards of several professional journals, including Laser Focus, Optics and Lasers in Engineering, and Optics & Laser Technology. The recipient of a bachelor’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, he studied there under pioneering physicist Emil Wolf, who is now also a professor at the University of Rochester. Retired since 1994, Dr. Thompson continues inspiring current faculty and students, and he also serves on the university’s Arboretum Committee.
