423 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine A s an educator, Calhoun Winton helped to expand his students’ minds by introducing them to some of the most prominent authors in the Western literary canon. With a particular focus on literature from the 18th century, he served as an instructor and department chair at several universities before retiring from the University of Maryland in 1997. Born in Fort Benning, Georgia, Dr. Winton attended Georgia Tech for two years before obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from the University of the South and a Master of Arts from Vanderbilt University. He also received a Master of Arts and Ph.D. from Princeton University, then began working as an assistant professor at the University of Virginia from 1957 to 1960. From 1960 to 1967, he served as an assistant professor, associate professor and assistant dean at the University of Delaware. It was during this time that he published “Captain Steele: The Early Career of Richard Steele,” a biography detailing the Irish writer and politician’s rise to notoriety. At the University of South Carolina, where he remained for just shy of 10 years, Dr. Winton was a professor in and chair of the English department. His follow-up, “Sir Richard Steele M.P.: The Later Career,” was published by Johns Hopkins University Press in 1970. He then joined the faculty of the University of Maryland, eventually serving as director of its Research Center for Humanities, and published “John Gay and the LondonTheatre,” a chronological, 10-chapter study of Gay’s career. Though he is two decades removed from the classroom, Dr. Winton has continued adding to the scholarship surrounding 18th century literature, compiling a collection of Aaron Hill’s plays and writing many articles and papers on the drama of the period. He also contributed to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography in 2004. A former fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, Dr. Winton received a research fellowship from the John Carter Brown Library, as well as awards and grants through the Fulbright Commission, the Folger Shakespeare Library and the American Philosophical Society.
