160 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Spending his entire career at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Dr. Roman W. DeSanctis retired from medicine in 2014 after accruing nearly 60 years of expertise in health care. After receiving an MD from Harvard University, from which he graduated magna cum laude in 1955, he completed an internship in medicine at MGH in 1956, followed by appointments as an assistant resident to senior resident in medicine at MGH until 1960. In 1962, Dr. DeSanctis completed a fellowship in cardiology at MGH. For 20 fruitful years, he served MGH as the director of clinical cardiology, having earned the distinction of physician and director emeritus of clinical cardiology upon his retirement in 2014. Alongside his primary efforts, Dr. DeSanctis joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School in 1962, where he was later named the first incumbent of the James and Evelyn Jenks and Paul Dudley White Professorship in Medicine in 1998. Enjoying not only the clinical applications of medicine, but also the mentorship of emerging physicians in cardiology and internal medicine, Dr. DeSanctis is especially proud of helping up-and-coming professionals pave their own way to success. Likewise, he has always enjoyed the humanistic aspects of medicine. Drawing upon a prior Bachelor of Science, summa cum laude, from the University of Arizona in 1951, Dr. DeSanctis served in the U.S. Navy following his receipt of his medical degree. Between 1956 and 1958, he served the Navy as the assistant to the attending physician to Congress. Later in his career, he contributed his plethora of expertise to written works, including authoring “On Being a Physician” in 2018, which discusses his journey in becoming a renowned physician and provides advice to graduates. To attest to his success, Dr. DeSanctis earned honorary DSc degrees from Wilkes College and the University of Arizona, as well as the 1999 Excellence in Clinical Teaching Award from Harvard Medical School, the 2003 Glonley-Raisbeck Award from the New York Academy of Medicine and the 1991 Gifted Teacher Award from the American College of Cardiology.
