Inspired by her own contributions as a foster parent and guardian ad litem, Ms. Burns is a published author, penning such works as “Kids Kids Kids: My Life Raising 100 Foster Children Over 30 Years” in 2016 and “65 Years with Richard Burns” in 2021, which discusses her life with her late husband, Richard. Ms. Burns and her late husband were avid travelers, having visited all seven continents and the largest rivers across the Earth. Together, they took part in adventures such as skydiving, white water rafting and hang gliding down mountain ranges. She has four children: Pamela Riegle, Michele Burns Kriese, Barbara Carter and Larry Cravens. Ms. Burns was named an Indiana Outstanding Geography Teacher of the Year by GENI, and she earned the Distinguished Elementary Teacher Award for 1994-1995 from the Indiana Council for Social Studies. Notably, she contributed to NASA’s Teacher in Space Project in 1986. Marlene L. Herr Burns is recognized as an educator who dedicated over 40 years to education prior to her retirement in 2013. Most recently serving as a second, third and fourth grade remedial reading teacher at South Elementary School beginning in 1995, she previously excelled as a teacher at Elwood CommunitySchools in1968andTiptonCommunity School Corporation in Indiana between 1969 and 1995. In her post-retirement years, Ms. Burns has been a volunteer educator at AmeriCorps/BBBS and an arts and crafts aide in a nursing home. Ms. Burns pursued a formal education at Ball State University, where she received a BS and an MA in elementary education and teaching in 1972. Having thrived as guardian ad litem for the Okeechobee 19th Circuit Court, she has lent her wealth of knowledge and time to civic endeavors. To this end, she has been a volunteer with the Okeechobee Presbyterian Food Bank, the Okeechobee Community Choir, the Indiana Historical Society, Meals on Wheels and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
