208 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS When he was young, Dr. Arjun Bhattacharya witnessed the career of his grandfather, who was a physician in their native country of India. Inspired greatly by his grandfather’s career choice, Dr. Bhattacharya also decided to delve into the same field. As such, he received an MD from Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, India, in 1961, followed by an MS in surgery at the GS Medical College and Hospital in Bombay, India, in 1967. Throughout the course of his longstanding career, Dr. Bhattacharya has performed a myriad of surgeries, such as general, cancer, vascular and trauma surgeries, and including one surgery on a pregnant woman who had mitral valve stenosis. In this surgical procedure, he successfully dilated the mitral valves, thus reviving the pregnant woman. The woman and her baby both survived, which was an unforgettable experience. At the inception of his career, Dr. Bhattacharya served as senior registrar at KEM Hospital in Bombay from 1967 to 1971, followed by a first-year residency at the University of Hawaii from 1971 to 1972 and a residency at Deaconess Hospital, St. Louis University and University of Missouri, Columbia from 1972 to 1975. Drawing upon the influence of his father, who was an English professor at Harvard University and University of Hawaii, he served as a clinical assistant professor at St. Louis University for many years. Likewise, he was president of the medical staff at Deaconess Hospital for two years. Alongside these endeavors, Dr. Bhattacharya was a director of Surgery Fleet 22 in the United States Navy, through which he rose from the rank of commander to captain by 1992. He notably served in Operation Desert Storm in Iraq from 1990 to 1991. A fellowof the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Bhattacharya has earned medals and ribbons from the Navy to celebrate his accomplishments. Outside of his primary pursuits, he served on the editorial board of the St. Louis Metropolitan Medical Magazine in the mid-1990s and has authored articles in medical journals. Looking forward, Dr. Bhattacharya would like to dedicate his spare time to his local VA hospital.
