Since 1971, he has excelled as the attorney and owner of the Law Office of Lawrence Kumabe in Honolulu, Hawaii. Outside of his primary legal endeavors, Mr. Kumabe has served with several community and nonprofit organizations. He is a trustee and executive board member of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation. He also served on the board of directors of the Japan-America Society, as well as on the board of governors of the Japanese Cultural Center and as the president of the Japanese American Citizen’s League of Honolulu. Furthermore, Mr. Kumabe was legal counsel to the Hawaii State Junior Chamber of Commerce. Throughout his career, Mr. Kumabe has always desired to retain the values that have made the United States a powerful force throughout the world, which include hard work, respect for authority, the desire to improve oneself through education, and being honest and straightforward. He is especially proud of representing the State of Hawaii delegation in Seattle to testify before the Congressional Commission on the Wartime Relocation and Internment of Japanese-American Civilians, which resulted in Congress appropriating $20,000 in reparations to each of 82,219 internees or $1.6 billion. Mr. Kumabe currently resides in Honolulu. He has two daughters, one grandson and one granddaughter. In his spare time, he enjoys exercising, volunteering in his community, studying and participating in politics, and spending quality time with his family. Looking toward the future, he intends to contribute more to his community and assist immigrant families that cannot afford lawyers. At the inception of his career in law, Lawrence D. Kumabe served as an attorney in the Attorney General’s Office, where he represented the Governor and the Office of Collective Bargaining at the inception of public sector collective bargaining in Hawaii.
