Additionally, McCoy Minerals is recognized as a geologybased educational facility for gemstones, mining and mineral supplies. Alongside this endeavor, Dr. McCoy established the Appalachian Fossil Museum in 2011, where he houses the largest private collection of natural fossils throughout North Carolina. Showcasing fossils across the nation from such states as Utah, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia, among other states, Dr. McCoy further has an extensive collection of rare gemstones that hail from the Appalachian Mountains. He takes great pride in providing educational opportunities to students who frequent his museum and stores. Outside of his primary career path, Dr. McCoy maintains involvement with several nonprofit and humanitarian organizations, having hosted the fundraising event Mining for a Purpose annually. Notably, the event, which is hosted through McCoy Minerals, has contributed $140,000 for the Cancer Emergency Fund since its inception in 2011. Additionally, he is a volunteer for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, has served as chairman of the board of the Cancer Resource Alliance in North Carolina and was a guest speaker for North Carolina’s oncology conference in 2010. To prepare for his career, Dr. McCoy received a bachelor’s degree from Quillen College and an MD from Duke University. Thereafter, he earned a surgical certification from the Fort Sam Houston Medical Academy. Followinghismilitarydeparture, he received a BS in recreation management from Appalachian State University in 2010. In accounting for his Army success, he has been decorated with a Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. Since the age of 6, Dr. Randy “Doc” McCoy has been collecting rocks and minerals. Following his reputable work as an emergency field surgeon for the United States Army, where he served for more than 10 years, he retired from military service in 2007 and founded McCoy Minerals, Inc.
