He greatly enjoyed being an active part of an international academic community, associating with brilliant colleagues and kind friends from several countries. Dr. Bryson has been grateful to have been able to continue writing and researching in retirement. Married to Patricia for well over 50 years, he has seven children, 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A Utah native, he and Pat spend summers in Provo, Utah, and winters in Fairview, Texas. A noteworthy economist and educator of more than 40 years, Phillip J. Bryson joined Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, in 1988 as a professor of economics. Retiring, he became professor emeritus in 2010. Earlier in his career, Dr. Bryson taught and conducted research at the University of Arizona in Tucson between 1967 and 1988 as assistant, then associate, and finally full professor of economics. Dr. Bryson received a PhD in economics from The Ohio State University in 1967. Throughout his longstanding career, he maintained membership in Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Beta Gamma Sigma honor societies. Over the years, he authored or co-authored a dozen books and many refereed articles in academic journals and books. Several of his books were written in retirement, including the 2015 book, “Socialism: Origins, Expansion, Decline and the Attempted Revival in the United States.” Dr. Bryson attributes his immense success to good fortune, as well as his diligent work ethic and willingness to pursue new opportunities as they have presented themselves.
