232 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine HEALTH AND WELLNESS Drawing upon a natural affinity for the sciences, Dr. Colin A. McCannel has excelled as a professor of clinical ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at the University of California Los Angeles since 2008, where he is also recognized as a vitreoretinal surgeon. Earlier, he served the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, as an associate consultant and consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology between 1995 and 2008. Since 1996, he has been board certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology. Dr. McCannel pursued a formal education at California State University, Northridge, where he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1987. From there, he attended the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and received an MD in 1991. Following his medical degree with an internship at the Mayo Clinic, which he completed in 1992, he subsequently finished a residency in ophthalmology and a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery and diseases at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UC Los Angeles by 1998. Notably, Dr. McCannel has lectured at amyriad of institutions on the topics of ophthalmology, eye disease, retinal vein occlusions and retinopathy, among other subjects. In 2009, he received the Innovation in Education Award from the Mayo Clinic School of Continuing Medical Education, which was preceded by the 2008 Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Additionally, he received a Senior Achievement Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists in 2007 and Teacher of the Year Award from the residents of ophthalmology at the Mayo Clinic in 1996, and he was a co-recipient of the Dr. Henry & Lillian Nesburn Award for Best Research Paper Submitted by a Resident in 1995. Authoring or co-authoring several clinical papers since 2011, Dr. McCannel has submitted to the journal RETINA and the New England Journal of Medicine. He notes that his papers on eye injections postsurgery and prophylaxis have been widely read and quoted. Although he has achieved many highlights, he is proudest of influencing the careers of the residents, fellows and students he has trained over the years. Millennium Magazine Featured Listee COLIN A.
