Following his receipt of his medical degree, he completed a residency in general and critical care surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in 1983, as well as an additional residency in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City in 1985. Commencing his professional career in 1986, Dr. Santos first served as a cardiothoracic surgeon in private practice in Encinitas, California, for three years. Subsequently, he relocated to Pueblo, Colorado, where he served in the same capacity at Southern Colorado Heart and Lung from 1990 to 1994. For the following two years, Dr. Santos excelled as a thoraciccardiovascular surgeon at Cedarwood Medical Center in St. Joseph, Michigan, prior to his current position. Since 1996, he has thrived as a thoracic-cardiovascular surgeon for the Laredo Medical Group in Texas. Notably, outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Santos completed missionary work in Africa in the late 1980s. Looking toward the future, he intends to further his involvement in missionary work, in which he will support underprivileged children and families who do not have necessary resources. Additionally, he would like to write a biography about his mother, from whom he still garners much inspiration. Dr. Santos is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Society of Critical Care Medicine and Society for Vascular Technology. In his spare time, he enjoys scuba diving and mountain climbing. He has been happily married to his wife Olivia for many years. D r. Arthur D. Santos was inspired by his mother, Hughenna Louise Gauntlett, who was the first woman of color to be board certified by the American Board of Surgery and was elected a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
