Since departing from the military, Dr. Sauri has thrived as a medical consultant for a travel advisory and immunization clinic and as the medical director of Occupational Health Consultants in Rockville, Maryland, since 1987. Dr. Sauri was named a Top Physician in internal medicine, infectious diseases and tropical medicine in the Washington Metropolitan Area and was the first physician recipient of the Defense Superior Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal. Additionally, he was honored with the Occupational Medicine Physician of the Year Award from the Maryland College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine in 2009, having also earned a myriad of decorations from the Department of Defense, State Department, and many state and local government entities. Dr. Sauri is a fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and the American College of Physicians, among others. Dr. Michael A. Sauri was initially inspired to enter the field of medicine in light of his own family members, who served as role models while he was growing up. Receiving a BA in microbiology and chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1971, he went on to attend the Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine and earned an MD in 1975. Shortly thereafter, he received a master’s degree in public health and tropical medicine from Tulane University in 1978. Dr. Sauri completed a residency in internal medicine at the Brooke Army Medical Center in 1983, which was followed by a fellowship in infectious diseases at Bethesda Navy Hospital. At the inception of his career, Dr. Sauri served in the United States Army as a lieutenant colonel before becoming chief of the general preventive medicine residency program at the School of Aerospace Medicine. Serving in that role from 1980 to 1981, he subsequently excelled as regional medical officer for the American Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand, from 1983 to 1984, as well as chief in the Department of Medicine of the U.S. Army from 1985 to MICHAEL A.
