Prior to attaining his current role, he spent a decade as general counsel and vice president of business development for IDEACore LLC. Mr. Lavigne also served on the board of directors of the Mid-Michigan Regional Medical Center Hospice and Visiting Nurses Association, as well as secretary and member of the board of directors of MILegalize. Mr. Lavigne has authored a myriad of articles in trade magazines and the professional journal of the State Bar of Michigan, where he serves as chair-elect of the cannabis law section. He is a lifetime member of NORML National Lawyers Committee and on the board of NORML of Michigan. Mr. Lavigne was honored with a Pioneer’s Award from the State Bar of Michigan in 2018, which recognized his participation in legalizing marijuana in Michigan and serving as a trailblazer in the movement for legalizing marijuana use. Thomas MJ Lavigne has served as managing partner and attorney with the Cannabis Counsel® Law Firm in Detroit since 2010. Helping external businesses earn their commercial cannabis licenses, Mr. Lavigne also oversees five in-house attorneys in his role. Alongside these responsibilities, he focuses his attention on real estate transactional issues, intellectual property law, litigation and municipal matters, regulatory compliance, state licensing and local permitting. Mr. Lavigne attended Wayne State University, earning a BA in English in 1985. Subsequently, he received a JD from Michigan State University in 1989. He attended programs at Maharishi International University and the East China University of Political Science and Law in Shanghai. He began his career with the Law Offices of Anthony P. Locrocchio in Hawaii as an attorney. Remaining there for six years, he then practiced law in North Carolina for four years before moving to Michigan, where he was a lawyer for Riecker, Van Dam, Barker & Black, P.C.
