151 Millennium - A Marquis Who’s Who Magazine ENTREPRENEURS Bernard Gutman has cultivated a career of excellence in entrepreneurship, having created five public companies. In 1955, he began his first venture, serving as the head of Gutman Consulting Company, providing financial and marketing services to clients. Additionally, from 1955 to 1978, he was chairman of the Delco Corporation, a company specializing in home improvement and renovation. During this time, he led a retail seminar for Sears, Roebuck and Co. when he was 27 years old and served as founder, president and chairman of the board of directors for the National Vitamin Corporation. Other entrepreneurial endeavors to Mr. Gutman’s credit included establishing Products & Patents, Inc., and founding Phase Out of America, Inc. While serving Phase Out of America, he helped develop PhaseOut, a product that helps consumers wean themselves off smoking. As a result, he saved thousands of lives around the world and was recognized by CancerCare with the banquet, “Diamonds and Denim Ball,” held in his honor. Furthermore, he was honored with the Corporate Leadership Award in 1996. He is especially proud of taking his first company public and helping to create the Prime Card, a discount card for select restaurants and hotels. He was recognized by Prudential Life Insurance and Bank of America, as well as other financial organizations. Mr. Gutman served in the U.S. Army during World War II, joining when he was 18 years old. Following his service, he began gaining professional experience selling storm windows at a reduced cost compared to his competitors, thus securing the funds to start his entrepreneurial work. He has always been a survivor, climbing the ranks of success from humble beginnings, shining shoes and delivering ice during the Great Depression to the position he is revered in today. Attributing his success to his “street smarts,” Mr. Gutman spent his youth as a famed dancing teacher at Grossinger’s Hotel in the Catskill Mountains and was coined “king of the mambo,” having helped create the “triple mambo” (later known as the cha-cha-cha) and being the first in the nation to teach the dance.
